In Bhai Pheru, a small industrial area in Kasur District, Punjab, all factories were at a standstill. Thousands of factory workers after having lost their daily earnings amid the coronavirus outbreak were at home, struggling to survive. Amid this situation, Zeenat Ahmad, daughter of a security guard at one of the local factories – once a TCF student, and now a teacher – stepped up to help!

“Around 3 weeks ago, I woke up to a beeping sound of a text message from TCF. They were asking for volunteers to support their relief effort. I said yes without thinking twice,” shares Zeenat who after completing her matriculation from a TCF School in 2012, went on to complete her B.Sc. from Punjab College, before returning to her alma mater to teach.

“I was aware of how the situation was evolving in our village. Some of the families I knew were surviving on day-old bread and water. It was an opportunity for me to help. I instantly called up three of my 10th grade students – Atiqa, Ayesha and Iffat – and sought their help in data collection,” shares Zeenat.

In about two days, these four young TCF women were able to shortlist almost 600 families in two villages of Bhai Pheru. Data of the eligible families was then passed on to the TCF COVID-19 Response team at the Head Office in Karachi where arrangements to provide cash-based relief worth Rs.2,500 to each of the shortlisted families were made via JazzCash. Zeenat and her team also helped the families in receiving their cash transfers from a small mobile cash shop in the village.
